⚡ Why Interconnected Smoke Alarms Are Required

Most homes across Brisbane are not compliant with current smoke alarm laws because their systems are not interconnected.

We regularly inspect and upgrade systems from our North Lakes base, and the majority of homes still rely on standalone alarms that do not meet current requirements.

Under Queensland legislation:

  • All smoke alarms must be interconnected
  • When one alarm activates, all alarms must sound

If your system does not meet this standard, your property is not compliant.

👉 Learn more about compliance requirements in North Lakes.

🔧 What Are Interconnected Smoke Alarms?

Interconnected smoke alarms ensure that when one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the home activates at the same time.

This provides:

  • Faster warning throughout the property
  • Greater safety for occupants
  • Full compliance with Queensland legislation

Without interconnection, occupants may not be alerted in time, particularly in larger or multi-level homes.

🏠 Interconnected Smoke Alarms Across Brisbane Homes

We install and upgrade interconnected systems across Brisbane daily, particularly in areas like North Lakes, Mango Hill, and Griffin, where many homes still operate under outdated standards.

Common issues we see include:

  • Standalone smoke alarms
  • Systems not properly connected
  • Incorrect alarm placement

Even newer homes often require upgrades to meet current interconnection requirements.

👉 Homes in Mango Hill and Griffin frequently require upgrades before rental or sale.

🚨 When Interconnection Becomes Urgent

Interconnected smoke alarms become urgent when:

  • A property is being rented
  • A home is being sold
  • A compliance inspection is required
  • Existing alarms are being replaced

If your system is not interconnected, your property is likely not compliant and may cause delays or issues.

👉 We regularly complete urgent upgrades across North Lakes and surrounding suburbs.

⚠️ Not Sure If Your System Is Interconnected?

Many homeowners assume their alarms are interconnected when they are not.

We frequently inspect homes across Brisbane and find that most systems do not meet this requirement.

Simple test:

If only one alarm sounds when triggered, your system is not interconnected.

We can quickly assess your system and upgrade it if needed.

Interconnected smoke alarms Brisbane — FAQ

What does "interconnected" mean for smoke alarms?
Interconnected means every smoke alarm in the home is networked together — when one detects smoke, all of them sound. This gives you precious seconds of early warning, especially in a bedroom at the opposite end of the house from where a fire starts. Interconnection is mandatory for every Queensland home from 1 January 2027.
Wireless RF interconnection vs hardwired — what's the difference?
Hardwired interconnection runs a thin 3-core cable between every alarm. It's the most robust and is preferred during renovations. Wireless (RF) interconnection uses a 433MHz radio signal between alarms. It's clean to retrofit on existing homes — no wall or ceiling damage. Both meet QLD compliance.
Will all my alarms still sound if the power goes out?
Yes. Every photoelectric alarm we install carries a 10-year sealed lithium backup battery. If mains power fails, the interconnection still works on battery, and every alarm in the network will still trigger together.
Can I mix brands or models when interconnecting?
No. Interconnection only works between alarms of the same brand and compatible model series. If you have a mix of brands or older units, the safest path is replacing all of them with a single matched system. We assess this at the quote stage.
How many interconnected alarms can be on one network?
Most certified residential systems support 12–40 alarms on a single interconnected network — far more than any normal Brisbane home will ever need. Larger commercial or multi-storey installs are sized to match.
