2027 Smoke Alarm Rules for SIL Homes in Queensland
Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes are not exempt from Queensland’s 2027 smoke alarm reforms. If you run SIL properties in Brisbane, every house needs to be checked now — not in late 2026 when everyone else starts scrambling.

What SIL Homes Need by 1 January 2027
- Photoelectric smoke alarms
- Interconnected alarms throughout the dwelling
- An alarm in every bedroom
- An alarm in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the house
- An alarm on every storey
- Alarms less than 10 years old
This applies whether the SIL home is provider-owned, privately leased, or managed under another housing arrangement.
Common SIL Compliance Problems
- Old alarms that are not interconnected
- Battery alarms in places that need proper replacement
- No alarms inside participant bedrooms
- No strategy for Deaf or hard of hearing residents
- No documentation for provider audit files
What SIL Providers Should Do Now
- Audit every property in the portfolio
- Identify which houses are already compliant and which are not
- Check each participant’s alerting needs, not just the building layout
- Upgrade early before the 2027 rush
- Keep certificates and testing records ready for audit
